Viagra affects the response to sexual stimulation. It acts by enhancing smooth muscle relaxation using nitric oxide, a chemical that is normally released in response to sexual stimulation. - Viagra is not a daily medication. Viagra does not cause an erection without sexual stimulation. Patients who are taking nitrate for chest pain cannot take Viagra.
- Viagra is to be taken 30 minutes to 1 hour before sexual activity. You may take it up to 4 hours before sexual activity. Take viagra by mouth with a glass of water.
- Do not take Viagra with similar medications such as Cialis (tadalafil) or Levitra (vardenafil).
